MGOYA “Get kids Moving”

Tour the Port of Los Angeles with Cynthia Ruiz, Deputy Executive Director
– External Relations

Los Angeles, CA. January 17th, 2013 ~ This Thursday (1.17), Medicines Global will be kicking off their 2013 Outdoor Youth Ambassador programs by taking 100 students from San Pedro High School on a private boat tour of the Los Angeles Harbor.Medicines Global Outdoor Youth Ambassadors (MGOYA) programs work in collaboration with Los Angeles Unified School District and the Los Angeles Police Department, in providing unique educational enrichment combined with wilderness experience programs for LA youth.

Cynthia Ruiz, Deputy Executive Director – External Relations for the Port of Los Angeles, invited the Medicines Global Outdoor Youth Ambassadors to go on the educational and historical boat tour. Ruiz will be leading the students on a one-mile walk to the boat dock and joining the boat ride. Cynthia Ruiz is a Team Member and Mentor for the Medicines Global Outdoor Youth Ambassadors. She was the Team Leader for the MGOYA Channel Islands National Park sea kayak adventure.

Ms. Ruiz, one of the most strategic women in the Los Angeles politics today, will be announcing, along with Janice and Johanna Belson, the co-directors of Medicines Global, the GoPro® photo contest called “GREEN ~ in the urban landscape”. The contest is meant to get kids to focus on the small aspects of nature that exist even in the midst of the inner city.

Throughout the year, the Medicines Global Outdoor Youth Ambassadors will go on adventures to Joshua Tree National Park, Channel Islands National Park, Death Valley National Park, enjoy the local surf & stand up paddle board lessons, take rock climbing lessons, and go on camping trips to Yosemite National Park. The students will also be taken to the Annenberg Space for Photography to see the highest quality of photography to spark a love of pictures and build an awareness of how influential the medium can be. While in the wilderness, the Outdoor Ambassadors will be encouraged to take ‘nature photographs’ so as to bring home, to the city, the beauty and importance of preservation of nature to their friends, family and entire communities. Medicines Global plans to arrange a gallery exhibit for the work to honor the winners of the GoPro photo contest.
