Midwest Mountaineering has had a strong commitment to the environment for a long time. For many years Midwest Mountaineering has donated 10% of pretax profits to environmental and wilderness causes. Each year employees vote which groups will receive funds from the Employee’s Environment Fund. Midwest Mountaineering is also a long time supporter of the Conservation Alliance.

In December 2008 Midwest Mountaineering and the Sierra Club cohosted the Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival in Minneapolis. The festival raised over $1000 for the Northstar chapter of the Sierra Club.

Thrifty Outfitters, Midwest Mountaineering’s upstairs repair facility, is certified by Goretex, Coleman and Helly Hansen and is actively recommended by many other vendors as a highly qualified repair center. Instead of Recycling old gear and clothing, Thrifty Outfitters allows customers to Reuse it.

Midwest Mountaineering, like most environmentally conscious businesses, encourages employees to bike or bus to work through a subsidy program. Electricity for the store is partially generated by wind power, for which Midwest Mountaineering pays a premium price. The majority of the lighting has been upgraded to florescent from incandescent, and for a few months the store even served as a drop off site for used compact florescent bulbs.
