PAONIA, Colorado—Peter Kray, an outdoor industry publishing veteran, has joined Mountain Gazette in the newly created position of editorial director. John Fayhee, who lives in Silver City, New Mexico, remains on staff as Editor at Large and will continue to write and edit for the Gazette.

“I look at the long list of iconic figures who have written for Mountain Gazette – writers like Ed Abbey, John Nichols, Dick Dorworth, George Sibley and John, and I feel like I’m sitting on a barstool surrounded by legends,” Kray said.

“John and I want to create a better overall structure and presentation for Mountain Gazette so as to better frame the alpine irreverence this magazine has always had as an original chronicler of Rocky Mountain culture,” he added.

Kray, who is also editorial director of Ski Press USA and editor at large for Backcountry Magazine, has begun work on the January issue and plans to introduce several new columns along with recurring columns such as Cartographic, Mountain Notebook and Mountain Poetry. “It’s a strong stable of features the magazine’s loyal ranks of readers have come to expect,” he said.

Besides unveiling exciting new features, the January issue will take a look at “America’s Last Ski Town,” an overview of the trials, triumphs, environmental and economic ramifications of Silverton Mountain’s single chairlift. The story, written by Kray, will introduce a new monthly Cover Story that takes a look at issues and experiences unique to the West.

Also in January, Wayne Sheldrake, author of ski bum epic “Instant Karma,” pens the first installment of the Gazette’s new Lost Art column. Look for topics as diverse as wax and klister, snow caves and snow graves, and why a compass still counts.

Gear-O-Rama will double the amount of gear and gadgets it critiques and REAL Estate promises a humorous look at the double-wides, mountain cabins and singletrack shacks REAL people can REALLY afford.

“It’s a perfect time for Mountain Gazette to sharpen its focus as the Rocky Mountain region’s most authentic cultural and literary voice,” said Paul Gibb, the magazine’s publisher.

“Adding Kray to the editorial team better positions us to capitalize on our role as the most irreverent, inquisitive and unvarnished representation of mountain culture. For our readers, our writers and our advertising partners, it’s an exciting time to be involved with both the legendary history and the bright future of Mountain Gazette,” Gibb said.

Mountain Gazette is owned by GSM Media with executive offices in Paonia, Colorado. Editorial Director Peter Kray lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico; John Fayhee now resides in Silver City, New Mexico, Publisher Paul Gibb lives in Paonia, Scott Leonard, associate publisher for sales, lives in Carbondale, and Art Director Colin O’Brien lives in Glenwood Springs.
