Mountain Hardwear Insiders Take on the Western States 100
6k Uphill Challenge offers opportunity for all to experience the historic course
Richmond, Calif. (June 25, 2015) – Mountain Hardwear, creator of performance apparel and equipment that empowers outdoor athletes to live boldly, is proud to support endurance trail runner and Mountain Hardwear President Topher Gaylord and Sports Marketing Specialist Byron Pittam as they attempt the Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run this weekend.
The Western States course features 18,000ft of ascent and 23,000ft of descent. The race begins in Squaw Valley and ascends to Emigrant Pass at 8,750ft, following the original trails used by gold and silver miners in the 1850s, to Auburn, a small town in the heart of California’s historic gold country.
Gaylord will attempt his 8th Western States finish this year, and Pittam will attempt a second sub-24 hour finish.
This year, Mountain Hardwear was able to team up with Montrail to sponsor the Montrail Ultra Cup and Last Chance Sweepstakes, opening up an additional 26 slots for those who weren’t chosen via the race lottery.
“The Montrail Ultra Cup and the new Last Chance Sweepstakes has added even more emotion and buzz around Western States,” said Pittam. “I am always taken aback by the human spirit and drive exhibited out on the course from the volunteers, crew, pacers and runners who give it all.”
As an event sponsor, Mountain Hardwear and Montrail will host the 6k Uphill Challenge on Friday, June 26th at 10am sharp. The starting line is just outside the KT-22 Base Bar. Preregistration is available Thursday June 25th from 3-5:30pm and Friday from 8-9:50am on Friday at the Montrail Booth in Squaw Village.
“The Uphill Challenge has proven to be a great way to get everyone involved in the lead-up to the 100-mile main event,” said Pittam. “From pacers, to kids and even professional athletes, it’s a unique opportunity to experience the third annual 6k of the Western States 100.”
