RICHMOND, Ca. (January 26, 2006) – Mountain Hardwear Inc., a leading mountaineering and outdoor equipment and clothing company, has awarded its first employee grant through a new philanthropic giving program called Mountain Hardwear Gives Back. The program was announced earlier this week. The first grant supports cardboard recycling at the Outdoor Retailer show, the premier US trade show for the Outdoor Industry, which starts Saturday, January 28, 2006 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The Mountain Hardwear Gives Back program celebrates the company’s dedication to the environment, outdoor sports, outdoor communities and the outdoor industry. The program also allows Mountain Hardwear employees to apply for paid time off to volunteer or for a grant to pay for a project of special interest in conjunction with the goals of the program.

Mountain Hardwear employee and grant recipient, Cathy Wiedemer said “The Outdoor Retailer show brings in approximately 11,000 people and the amount of waste generated is huge. It has always concerned me how much cardboard is thrown in the trash bins instead of being recycled. Our industry talks a lot about taking care of the earth. I want us to walk our talk.”

The grant provided for numerous cardboard recycling bins to travel the aisles during setup collecting cardboard to be recycled. The bins are identified by the operators Green Team Mountain Hardwear T-shirts.

Mountain Hardwear designs, sources and markets high-end mountaineering and outdoor equipment, apparel and accessories. Mountain Hardwear was established in 1993 by a group of outdoor industry veterans and is based in Richmond, Calif. The company distributes its products through specialty outdoor and sporting goods retailers in the United States and 30 countries worldwide. Mountain Hardwear has won numerous product and customer service awards since its inception. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Columbia Sportswear Company.
