Mountainsmith Phoenix Receives Backpacker Green Award

Golden, Colorado – Mountainsmith, the Colorado-based innovators of cutting-edge packs and bags, was awarded today a prestigious Backpacker Editor’s Choice Green Award for their Phoenix backpack, made from 100% PET recycled fabric. The announcement was made by Greg Thomsen, company president.

In presenting the award, Backpacker’s editors recognized the outstanding design, “green” materials, and performance innovations that are embodied in the Phoenix. The pack is made from an impressive list of recycled components including 100% PET recycled body fabric, reinforcements, rip stop lining, webbing and binding. In addition, the waistbelt frame sheet is 80% recycled and the air mesh is 62% PET recycled. The aluminum stays are recyclable and the hardware is eco-friendly.

In 2006, Mountainsmith took a leadership position as the first outdoor company to bring recycled fabric technology to modern pack design with the introduction of the Recycled Tour and Recycled Day lumbar packs. For 2008, the company now has over 35 styles of packs, bags, and luggage constructed of recycled PET fabric, including the award-winning Phoenix.

PET Recycled fabric is woven from threads produced from 100% recycled plastic beverage bottles. With
