The year was 1982. Mountainsmith designers became obsessed with finding a replacement for the poor-fitting packs available at the time. Their quest triggered the idea for the first-ever lumbar pack that subsequently became an outdoor icon. An entirely new product segment was born that efficiently transferred weight to the lumbar area as Mountainsmith’s answer to neck, back, and shoulder pain. Many have followed, but the lumbars from Mountainsmith continue to be number one in the category and are the company’s most-recognized products for done-in-a-day adventures on the trail, sidewalk or campus. These are not your father or mother’s packs. For 2012, the new TLS (Technical Lumbar Systems) line continues the company’s commitment to eco-friendly textiles combined with new 21st century “do-it-in-a-day†functionality and aesthetics.
The Recycling Process… The ever-mounting waste of plastic bottles made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a pandemic in progress. In 2006, Mountainsmith consequently took a leadership position as the first outdoor company to incorporate recycled post-consumer materials into modern pack design with the introduction of the Recycled Day and Tour lumbars. Together with their factory partners, the company developed ReForge™, a fabric made from 100% post-consumer PET bottles, whereas many other manufacturers only use a percentage of recycled PET in their sustainable products. All color fabric on the lumbars are constructed using ReForge. Additional components including zippers, webbing, mesh and buckles have also been innovated upon by Mountainsmith using sustainable manufacturing practices and materials.
New for 2012…Various new features are found throughout the line. The raised dual density Lumbar Control Point™ Pad isolates and secures the pack load into the lumbar region, locking it into the small of the back. Air mesh back panels with DWR (Durable Water Repellent) anti-sweat finish increase comfort in warm weather or heavy aerobic activities by not allowing air mesh to hold and retain perspiration. Internal padded sleeves in the Day TLS and Tour TLS protect I-Pads, I-Pods and other Netbooks. Low profile side bottle pockets fit SIGG and Nalgene style water bottles. There are high tenacity nylon reinforcements in key wear areas and increased ergonomics in the fit of the compression strap webbing.
