Movement Skis Moves Further Toward Sustainability

Ski brand recognized by internationally accredited and certified sustainable forest organizations

Vancouver, BC – Movement Skis, the Swiss-born freeride and freestyle ski brand, is proud to announce the company has been recognized by the 2 leading international forest conservation organizations for the use of sustainable forest products in the manufacturing of its 2007/08 ski collection.

This season, Movement’s all-wood-based product line is derived from selected round timber like Okume, Karuba, and Poplar – all originating from certified sustainable forests endorsed by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). These global watchdog organizations provide an assurance mechanism to purchasers of wood products that they are promoting the sustainable management of the world’s forests.

“Skiing is an iconic image of our times and we have chosen a non-conventional manufacturing path. But our decision to use certified woods is not only a benefit to the biodiversity of nature and the environment, we see it supporting the economic viability and sustainability of the ski industry,” said Jayson Faulkner, from Movement.

For thousands of years – and up until the mid-1930’s when the first aluminum ski was made – all skis were made out of wood. The core is the spirit and the heart of the ski: it gives each ski its defining characteristics, its liveliness – its energy. Yet today, it’s both faster and more cost-efficient to mass produce cores using modern synthetic foams and fiberglass resins – the standard for most manufacturers – despite it being known to leach toxic chemicals and create large amounts of liquid and solid waste during production. As newer, more responsible harvesting solutions are realized – Movement continues to develop new types of cores offering mechanical characteristics of high performance, with the optimal ratio between weight and performance.

“From a skier’s perspective, these certifications represent a promise by Movement,” added Faulkner. “Not only does this label allow consumers worldwide to recognize they own a responsibly made product, but it acts as a future ‘promise’ – to be delivered in continued powder days, more tree runs, and epic ski tales,” he added.
