October 8, 2009 (Denver, Colo.) – The 2010 Backpacker Magazine Summit for Someone series officially opens on October 12, 2009, and is looking for participants. As the main fundraising channel for Big City Mountaineers, Summit for Someone has space for 150 climbers and includes a few new features for 2010.

In addition to the standard alpine and glacier climbs, SFS is offering a mountaineering course, Devils Tower climbing course and a women’s specific climb.

Mountaineering Course

After a successful inaugural year on Mt. Sneffels in Southern Colorado, for its second year, the mountaineering course is relocated to Rocky Mountain National Park and will be led by Colorado Mountain School. The course is designed to teach aspiring mountaineers the basics and will culminate in a classic route on a Rocky Mountain National Park peak.

Devils Tower

Devils Tower in Wyoming is the newest addition to the SFS series. Climbers will base camp at Devils Tower Lodge and spend a day in a climbing gym before tackling the rock. This is a perfect opportunity for someone who is interested in learning climbing techniques, as it is a 2:1 climber/guide ratio.

Women’s Specific

The women’s climb for 2010 will be on Mt Rainier and be led by Rainier Mountaineering International guide Melissa Arnot.

Each climb is lead by well-renowned guide services such as Jackson Hole Mountain Guides, GoTrek Expeditions, Rainier Mountaineering International and Sierra Mountaineering International. SFS climbs are conducted with certified guide services with permits and approval of their respective land-management agencies.

About Summit for Someone:

Backpacker Magazine’s Summit For Someone™ benefit climbs are Big City Mountaineers primary fundraising program, in which individuals fundraise to go on a guided mountaineering trip on many of North America’s most sought after peaks. The funds raised from Backpacker Magazine’s Summit For Someone™ benefit climbs are enough to fully sponsor five teens and a youth agency leader for the summer outdoor youth mentoring program.www.summitforsomeone.org
