Top American at the 2013 Ironman World Championships joins Newton’s pro athlete team
(Boulder, Colo.)—Newton Running, the official run course and shoe sponsor of IRONMAN® in the United States, today signed a one-year contract with professional triathlete Timothy O’Donnell, who was the top American finisher at the 2013 Ironman World Championships, placing fifth. Originally from Shaverton, Pennsylvania, O’Donnell now lives in Boulder, Colorado, and is the first American on Newton’s pro athlete roster, joining the likes of Rachel Joyce, Craig Alexander, Heather Fuhr, Chis Legh, Tim Berkel, Chris McDonald, Paula Newby-Fraser and Michellie Jones.
“Tim is a great addition to the Newton tribe, which includes athletes who are not only world-class in their sport, but are first and foremost amazing people who give back to the community,” says Newton Running Athlete Team Manager Andrew Maxwell. “Plus, Tim’s military background and support of organizations like Team Red, White and Blue align well with how Newton has always supported our service men and women.”
Newton Running has long offered eligible military service members special discounts at www.NewtonRunning.com and hosted clinics about healthier and more efficient running techniques at U.S. military bases domestically and abroad.
Prior to becoming a professional triathlete, Timothy O’Donnell, 33, served in the United States Navy, becoming an officer in the Special Ops Community after graduating from the United States Naval Academy. During his Naval career, O’Donnell won six consecutive Armed Forces Championships. Since going pro in 2009, O’Donnell, or “TO”, has racked up 20 professional career wins, including IRONMAN® Brazil in 2013, where he set a course record (8:01:32).
“Newton brings so much to the table: dedication to the science of running, fun and exciting marketing, the family support of a hometown company and of course, unbelievable shoes,” says O’Donnell. “I’ve already noticed a fresh ‘pop’ in my run stride and I can’t wait to unleash the Newton advantage in Kona!”
As a member of Team Red, White and Blue, a non-profit organization that helps wounded military veterans re-integrate into society through social and physical activity, O’Donnell raises awareness for the challenges facing returning veterans. The cause is personal for O’Donnell, whose friend and former Naval Academy triathlon teammate Dan Cnossen, lost both his legs in combat.
