WADHURST, England – Nikwax, based in Wadhurst, England, has received the prestigious ISO 14001 certification, further demonstrating the company’s ironclad commitment to minimizing its environmental impact. The certification verifies that Nikwax has a fully integrated, sustainable and comprehensive environmental management plan that follows international standards. To achieve ISO 14001, an external, accredited organization certified that the Nikwax environmental management plan has implementable and measurable goals to decrease the negative environmental impacts that it can control.
“Achieving ISO 14001 is quite a process, and we’re proud to have our operational plans endorsed with this internationally-recognized standard,†said Nikwax representative Chas Fisher. “Our policy and continuing challenge has always been to assert as minimal impact as possible with our environmental footprint. This is an ongoing quest and we are pleased to mark our progress with ISO 14001 certification.â€
The Nikwax staff has been working over 18 months to achieve this certification, which required: implementation and justification of an environmental management system, environmental audits, environmental performance evaluations, environmental labeling of products, product life-cycle analysis, and varied assessments of environmental aspects in product standards.
Metrics established through the 18-month process of achieving certification shows the remarkable dedication and results of the Nikwax team. By checking waste control, optimizing consumption of resources (water, electricity, fuel, etc.) and boosting pollution prevention, Nikwax:
•Increased recycling from four lines to 10
•Decreased waste to landfill by 50-percent
•Now uses 95-percent renewable energy
•Trained 60-percent of staff in environmental awareness
•Reduced gas consumption by 21-percent
