Lander, Wyo. On Friday, January 28, 2011, Opportunity Knocks announced that The National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) is one of the 15 best nonprofits to work for nationwide.

In its Annual Peoples’ Choice Best Nonprofit to Work For Awards, Opportunity Knocks invited nonprofit employees submit a brief essay on why they consider their organization to be a great place to work. Nominators could take into consideration factors that are important to them, such as quality of work/life balance, their organizations’ adherence to its mission, camaraderie of employees, unique benefits, training programs and career paths.

A submission by a NOLS employee earned NOLS a spot as one of five of the best nonprofits to work for in its operating budget category, along with prestigious institutions such as Stanford University. The full list is available at http://content.opportunityknocks.org/best-nonprofit-to-work-for/.

“NOLS is a great community of students and staff who work hard to fulfill the school’s mission of being the leading teacher of wilderness education, but also know how to have fun,” said NOLS’ Executive Director John Gans. “For a few years now we have been recognized by Outside magazine as one of the best places to work, but it is a special honor to be recognized in the nonprofit sector. Although nonprofits face the challenge of more limited resources, we are also staffed by employees who are incredibly passionate about their work. Topping a list of nonprofits is therefore all the more significant.”

This is the fourth year that Opportunity Knocks has held its Best Nonprofit to Work For Awards. “Opportunity Knocks continues to see the need to provide nonprofit professionals a platform to give recognition and appreciation to the organizations providing quality work environments for the people in jobs that change the world,” said Karen Beavor, President and CEO of Opportunity Knocks. “The 4th Annual Peoples’ Choice Best Nonprofit to Work For Awards demonstrates how nonprofit organizations can not only make a difference in the community but also have an incredibly positive impact on the lives of the people that work for them. Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all that took the time to submit their nomination.”
