NOLS wins Sustainable Tourism Award

Lander, WY. The National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) has been recognized by the Chilean government as a leading organization in Chile that practices and promotes sustainable tourism. Chile’s National Secretariat of Tourism, which granted NOLS this award, commended the school for the impacts its graduates have made in the field of sustainable tourism in Chile.
Rachael Price, Director of NOLS Patagonia, accepted the award on behalf of NOLS Patagonia Chilean graduates. “We are thrilled to be recognized for our efforts,” said Price. “Over the last two decades, NOLS Patagonia has been able to educate and empower hundreds of Chileans through its wilderness education courses, Spanish program courses, Instructor-In-Training program, Leave No Trace ethics, and Wilderness Medicine Institute curriculum. These graduates, in turn, have had a positive impact on Chilean tourism, and stand out among their peers in the industry because of their commitment to minimum impact practices, their solid technical skills, their versatility with communication, and their leadership abilities in the organizations they serve.”
Price, along with Michel Raab (NOLS Patagonia Spanish Programs Coordinator) and (Mauricio Inostroza NOLS Patagonia Assistant Director) attended the awards ceremony, which occurred during the closing ceremonies off a four-day tourism development conference attended by over one hundred participants from three regions in Chile. The tone of this conference was one of conservation. Themes included preserving the rivers and ecosystems of Chile for future generations, long-term thinking, and sustainability, all strong messages in light of the controversial hydroelectric projects and widespread salmon farming operations in the region.
