(seattle, wa) – ultrarunners know well the critical importance of proper hydration. drinking up and drinking often to keep electrolyte levels in balance plays a key role in a top performance or even just making it to the finish line. in 2007, nuun—pronounced ‘noon’—will help hydrate the three dozen elite ultrarunners of team montrail so they can go the distance. nuun will also support up to a dozen ultrarunning events this year by providing ready-to-drink nuun at aid stations, in goody bags and as race prizes.
lisa smith-batchen is one of the well-hydrated ultrarunners that uses nuun. a veteran endurance athlete, coach and event director, smith-batchen, of victor, idaho, continually pushes the limits of distance-defying running. in 2006, she ran her seventh badwater ultramarathon—certainly among the toughest ultras on the globe. after running the 135-mile course across the blazing-hot death valley to mount whitney, california, smith-batchen wasn’t quite done. she continued on, first to the summit of mount whitney (the highest point in the contiguous united states). then, retracing the badwater route back to the start line, she completed the ‘badwater double’—a distance of over 300 miles. of the dozens of ultras, 90 marathons, and numerous ironman triathlons smith-batchen has finished, the ‘badwater double’ stands out as the highlight of her career.
since using nuun, says smith-batchen, “i feel the hydration difference, truly. i’m consciously drinking more because it’s easy to use. i wouldn’t be able to do that carrying around a big jug of hydration mix. nuun’s so small and compact. you just drop the tablet in and off you go. there’s no excuse not to be hydrated.â€
smith-batchen uses nuun daily in her training and will have it along when she returns this july to compete in the badwater again—and when she redoubles that effort and goes for her second badwater double.
