Ocean Kayak, the brand that helped pioneer the sit-on-top kayak category, celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2011. Since the brand’s inception in 1971, Ocean Kayak has become synonymous with the stable, durable and paddler-friendly sit-on-top kayak and has subsequently emerged as a leader in the burgeoning kayak fishing industry.
As part of the 40th anniversary celebration Ocean Kayak will be running some exciting promotions starting March 1st, as well as orchestrating numerous contests and giveaways on its Facebook page throughout the year. The brand is also preparing to launch its 2012 collection at the summer Outdoor Retailer show in Salt Lake City, Utah this summer.
“The founder of Ocean Kayak, Tim Niemier, came up with the concept of a sit on top kayak by taking a surf board and carving out an area to sit and an area to store his dive gear,†explains Sara Knies, Ocean Kayak Marketing Director. “Today, many thousands and thousands of boats later, we’re the world’s largest manufacturer of sit-on-tops and look forward to continuing our leadership position in the marketplace.â€
From humble beginnings on the beaches of Malibu, California to a place at the table in Johnson Outdoors Watercraft Division, Ocean Kayak has stayed true to its roots in performance, innovation and passion for the outdoors. Ocean Kayak was one of the first brands to start manufacturing and selling rotationally molded sit-on-top kayaks and the brand continues to innovate today through new products including the Trident Ultra 4.7 fishing kayak, Nalu 12.5 hybrid paddleboard and the motorized Torque.
