Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) and The Conservation Alliance today announced a special, joint seminar offering a snapshot of the impact of climate change on the American West’s wild lands.

Andrew Skurka, the first person to complete the 6,875-mile “Great Western Loop” hike connecting the great Wilderness areas of the American West, will make a slide presentation entitled The Great Western Loop: Global Warming and the West’s Wild Lands, at the Outdoor Retailer Winter Market, Thursday, January 24, 12:00 noon – 1:00 p.m. at the Downtown Marriott.

Skurka recently won the coveted National Geographic “Adventurer of the Year” Award for his trek, which links the Pacific Crest and Continental Divide trails and traverses 12 National Parks and over 75 wilderness areas. Skurka, 26, completed his expedition by walking an average of 33 miles per day for 208 straight days, covering a distance equivalent to 262 marathons or twice the distance between Boston and San Francisco. In addition to experiencing many of the most pristine and beautiful landscapes in America, Skurka surveyed the toll that global warming is taking on them.

“The health of our wild lands is intertwined with the health of our children, our industry and our country,” commented Frank Hugelmeyer, president of OIA, “It is up to us as an industry to do our part to ensure these areas are healthy for future generations to enjoy. OIA is committed to supporting the industry as we address the complex issues surrounding climate change, Andy’s presentation is sure to bring an inspiring and informed perspective on these issues.”

“We are pleased to be working with OIA and GoLite to help bring Andrew to Salt Lake City to share his adventure and his learnings with us,” remarked John Sterling, executive director of The Conservation Alliance. “North America’s wild places are at risk, and our industry can play a meaningful role in preserving these areas for their habitat and recreational values. Andy’s presentation will be both a celebration, and a wake-up call.”

In addition to the slide presentation, images of Andrew’s adventure will be raffled off, with all proceeds benefiting The Conservation Alliance.
