FELDKIRCHEN-WESTERHAM (May 2, 2018) — Alex Megos, one of the most accomplished sport climbers in the world, is new team member of the global GORE-TEX athlete team. Born and raised in Erlangen, Germany, the 24-year-old Megos started climbing when he was six years old. His father introduced him to the high rock walls just outside of Frankenjura, a famous sport-climbing area in Germany. It was this initial introduction to the sport that led him to win his first competition in 2009 at the European Youth Cup Championships.
Known for his disciplined approach to training, and for the sheer number of cutting-edge routes he has climbed in a relatively short time span, Megos became the first person to onsight (climb on the first try without prior knowledge of the climb) a route graded 9a/5.14d in difficulty in 2013. The route was Estado Critico in Siurana, Spain. He also climbed the legendary route Action Directe, after just three attempts in a two-hour timespan. Megos soon raised the bar and climbed a route graded 9b/5.15b. Most recently, he completed one of the hardest boulder problems in the world, “The Finnish Line” V15/16 in Rocklands, South Africa.
Megos is also a successful competition climber, with a second-place in the European Bouldering Championships and Lead World Cup in Kranji in 2017.
“Obviously Alex’s accomplishments are impressive, but what’s equally impressive is his attitude, which is one of the reasons he’s a great ambassador to be aligned with the GORE-TEX brand,” said Andreas Marmsoler, responsible for Global Sponsorship at W. L. Gore & Associates. “We see an increasing interest among young people for climbing, and with Alex on our team we help inspire them to reach their climbing dreams and our brand to remain an integral part of their outdoor experiences.”
Of his sponsorship with Gore, Megos said: “Climbing means a lot to me. I’ve made my hobby into my profession, which isn’t always easy, but I can’t image my life any other way. My goal is to reach my limit. And as soon as I reach it I want to push it further. I’m proud to partner with the GORE-TEX brand because I see the same desire to push standards reflected in GORE-TEX products. The GORE-TEX name represents leadership in outdoor gear, and the brand is constantly striving to make sure it continues to lead the way forward in innovative and sustainable fabrics and technologies.”
