Optic Nerve Unveils Patented Interchangeable Lens Technology

New system makes it easier to change lenses; also new for 2012: hydrophobic coatings and multiple lens packages

Optic Nerve’s new patented interchangeable lens design technology is the newest chapter in the history of a brand that prides itself on bringing smart solutions to market that add value for consumers, not cost.

Company co-founder and chief mad scientist of research and development, Tom Fox, said the idea to tinker with interchangeable lens technology was a direct response to consumer feedback. Fox said he’d heard from a number of loyal fans that while they often purchased them, the “hassle factor” of carefully sliding interchangeable lenses in and out of a channel in the frame was a deterrent to their use.

So Fox went to work on building the proverbial better mousetrap and described how the resulting Fin™ Interchangeable Lenses work. Quite simply, a tiny fin on the lens fits into a corresponding break in a ramp on the frame. The resultis a lens that lies flat against the frame but most importantly, is at once easier to pop in and out yet just as secure, if not more so, than the traditional channel system.

Optic Nerve will introduce the new Fin system to consumers in five models beginning next year: Apex, Action Suit, Bender, Omnium, and the Hermosa.

In addition to functional changes, Optic Nerve is introducing a pricing program that gives consumers even more choice and value. All $79 models of the Premium Interchangeable collection will include three lenses (Smoke, Copper, and Clear), each with a hydrophobic coating. The hydrophobic coating protects the lens from water, oil, and dust giving it heightened cleanability and durability. All $49 Interchangeable frames will be sold in the Deuce program packaged with two lenses, Smoke and Copper, giving consumers versatile product at an affordable price point.

Fox’s enthusiasm for all the new bells and whistles Optic Nerve will introduce in 2012 is rooted in tradition. His father started the business back in 1976 with the conviction that consumers would welcome a sunglass that hit the sweet spot in providing high levels of performance at unexpectedly reasonable prices. “I have a lot of fun looking for ways to bring new ideas and fresh features to market that continue to surprise and delight the many friends this brand has made over the years,” Fox said.

Optic Nerve’s 2012 line will make its official debut at the bike industry trade show, Interbike International Bicycle Expo, in Las Vegas, NV, Sept. 14 – 16. Check out the fin technology and the full range of Optic Nerve sunglasses in person at Interbike Booth #6045 or check them out online at
