Outdoor Research, manufacturer of functional solutions for human powered adventure, today announced their partnership the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) on the remediation of a stretch of unused train tracks on Utah Street in Seattle, WA. The idled railroad tracks have posed a problem on this heavily trafficked cycling route which is in close proximity to the Outdoor Research corporate headquarters.

The tracks cross Utah Street on a diagonal making it difficult to ride across them at a safe 90º angle. The main thoroughfare, First Avenue, is a freight corridor for the SODO business district and cyclists typically do not use this route. However the problem posed by the train tracks on nearby Utah St. prevented local cyclists from commuting comfortably. To help make this a better corridor for cycling, Outdoor Research and another local business volunteered funds to assist in the train track remediation.

The donation of $5,000 from Outdoor Research and $5,000 from another local business combined with $20,000 from the City of Seattle resulted in the remediation of this section of Utah Street on Saturday, September 27, 2008. “Outdoor Research is proud to have helped increase safety for our employees who commute by bike as well as the other local cyclists using this route,” said Audrey Hicks, Vice President of Finance and Administration with Outdoor Research. A celebration is planned for October 3, 2008 to commemorate the repaved road.
