Outdoor Research, manufacturer of functional solutions for human powered adventure, announced today that as part of the company’s commitment to lessening their footprint on the environment, they will be retrofitting the entire lighting systems of the Seattle based company’s headquarters. The company’s headquarters house not only the Outdoor Research corporate offices but also a manufacturing facility and Outdoor Research brand store.
The Outdoor Research in-house Environmental Impact Group worked with local Seattle city officials to develop a lighting retrofit plan, resulting in a comprehensive facility assessment prior to the beginning of the overhaul. The project is underway and should be completed by February 1, 2009.
The lighting retrofit will enable Outdoor Research to reduce 250,000 kilowatts of electricity per year, which equates to 25% of the company’s usage. This savings is enough to power 23 average US homes for a full year. Yet, even with lower power consumption, the building will have brighter, whiter, cleaner lighting and the newly installed standardized bulbs and ballasts will result in lower maintenance costs. As the final step in the overhaul, Outdoor Research has committed to recycling all bulbs and ballasts to a local, responsible recycler.
