Project OR Student Designers Challenged to Design and
Construct Waterproof, Insulated Climbing Pant
SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. and SALT LAKE CITY- January 20, 2011 – As part of Project OR, Outdoor Retailer today charged six design students with designing and constructing a woman’s insulated, climbing pant. The design brief announcement kicked off the 48-hour concept-to-prototype student design competition held in conjunction with and filmed live at the Outdoor Retailer Winter Market trade show.
The winning design will be a highly functional and durable pant that is both waterproof and insulated. A woman’s fit-pant with full range of motion is needed to provide comfort and warmth during the fictional client’s long days of ice climbing and guiding. The student designers have also been challenged to include convenient restroom accessibility.
As always, contestants must consider the garment’s full life cycle, its care requirements and how to incorporate repurposed materials. In the final stages of the competition, designers will identify and justify design for their pant’s components and features.
The student designers will now begin sketching and creating concept boards for the judges to review at 2:00 p.m. in booth #37201 (co-located with the Design Center).
