March 6, 2006, Santa Fe, NM-Outside magazine announced today that Christopher Keyes will become its new editor, beginning in early April. Keyes comes from a highly successful tenure as editorial director at Texas Monthly in Austin.

“I’ve followed Chris’s career since he was an associate editor at Outside, and especially his growth under Evan Smith at Texas Monthly,” said Outside’s Chairman and Editor in Chief, Lawrence Burke. “Chris has been committed to the Outside lifestyle since he was an undergraduate at Duke. We look forward to him bringing this enthusiasm, passion, and commitment to Outside.”

This will be a homecoming for Keyes, who began as an editorial intern at Outside in 1999 and, by the time he left the magazine in 2002, had been promoted to associate editor. Next he was the articles editor for Skiing Magazine, and in 2004 he became the articles editor at Texas Monthly. He was promoted to editorial director of Texas Monthly in early 2005.

Keyes earned his B.A. in environmental science policy at Duke University, in Durham, North Carolina, in 1996. He is an avid skier, runner, cyclist, and world traveler. Keyes taught English for a year in Taipei, Taiwan, and also spent a semester abroad in Botswana during college.
