Outside named The Conservation Alliance as the beneficiary of a special initiative tied to its first ever “Green Revolution†issue. The magazine will donate one dollar of each April issue sold on newsstands* to The Conservation Alliance to support the group’s efforts to protect wild places throughout North America for their habitat and recreational values.
“For 30 years, Outside has inspired readers with stories about wild places; through this partnership, those readers can help protect some of those places,†said John Sterling, Executive Director of The Conservation Alliance. “We’ll use the funds to support the place-based conservation efforts of our grantees.â€
The Outside promotion comes on the heels of a successful year for The Conservation Alliance. In 2006, seven Alliance grantees succeeded in their efforts, protecting 1 million acres of wildlands in the US, creating a 4.4-million-acre Provincial Park in British Columbia, removing one dam in Colorado, and closing 300,000 acres in Montana to oil and gas development. The Outside initiative – part of the publication’s 30th Anniversary celebration – will help The Conservation Alliance support a greater number of land and water conservation efforts.
“Outside is pleased to celebrate our anniversary by making a significant contribution to the world outside, which has been our inspiration for 30 years,†said Lawrence J. Burke, Founder and Chairman of Mariah Media, Inc.
The Conservation Alliance plans to contribute at least $700,000 to conservation projects in 2007, a 25 percent increase over the 2006 grant total.
*Outside will feature this promotion in participating states and will donate up to $50,000 to The Conservation Alliance.
About the Conservation Alliance:
The Conservation Alliance is an organization of outdoor businesses whose collective contributions support grassroots environmental organizations and their efforts to protect wild places where outdoor enthusiasts recreate. Alliance funds have played a key role in protecting rivers, trails, wildlands and climbing areas.
Membership in the Alliance is open to companies representing all aspects of the outdoor industry, including manufacturers, retailers, publishers, mills and sales representatives. The result is a diverse group of businesses whose livelihood depends on protecting our natural environment.
Since its inception in 1989, the Alliance has contributed more than $5.3 million to grassroots environmental groups. Alliance funding has helped save over 36 million acres of wildlands; 26 dams have either been stopped or removed; and the group helped preserve access to more than 16,000 miles of waterways and several climbing areas.
