Seattle — Pacific Market International (PMI), the owner of the Stanley and the Aladdin brands, has been awarded the 2006 American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) Shanghai Corporate Social Responsibility Award for Small Business. This award is in recognition of the exceptional efforts and advancements that PMI has made in their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs.
“Corporate Social Responsibility is the foundation of every success we have enjoyed at PMI,†stated Rob Harris CEO and Founder of PMI. “By doing business the right way from the very beginning, we have become a leader in our industry.â€
The evaluation for the AmCham Shanghai CSR award is based on the following criteria: corporate governance, environmental effort, social impact and workplace practices. Below are some of the ways that PMI has shown itself to be an industry leader in these categories.
Corporate Governance: PMI published its first workplace Code of Conduct (COC) to partner factories in 1998. In 2000 Price Waterhouse helped to revise the PMI COC Plan and to set-up a Compliance Monitoring Program that supports the revised COC plan.
Environmental Effort: Beginning in 2005 PMI has started to require that all partner factories be ISO 14001 certified, has set-up an Environmental Management System (EMS) and has launched the Life Cycle Assessment project to study and reduce energy consumption. Also, all of the company’s food and beverage products are designed to be reusable.
Social Impact: Since 2003 PMI has sponsored the “Hope Project†a Shanghai fund dedicated to support primary education for children. PMI is also a supporter of Ocean Conservancy and Conservation International.
Workplace Practices: At PMI, CSR initiatives are about empowering people. PMI emphasizes training programs that managers and employees learn how to be successful, efficient and safe. As an international company with global employees and partners, cultural diversity is at the center of PMI’s operations structure.
PMI was honored to be recognized by AMCham Shanghai for their work in CSR. In his acceptance speech at the 2006 AmCham Shanghai award ceremony, Qin Chen, Managing Director of Asia Business Development and Operations, said “CSR is the fundamental element of our brands and services. Our commitment to CSR is long term. We do it because this is what we believe in.â€
