Steamboat Springs, Colo. (May 15, 2007): Head to Steamboat Springs, Colo., Memorial Day (Monday, May 28) for the second annual Paddling Life Pro Invitational to watch the best men and women kayakers in the world compete in a two-event competition for a $2,500 cash purse and year-long bragging rights.

Held just before the Teva Mountain Games, the event tests both downriver creek racing and freestyle, with the best overall score determining the champion. Last year’s winner—and former World Freestyle Kayak Champion–Jay Kincaid, will be on hand to defend his title, as will women’s winner Tanya Faux. Other competitors signed on to compete include Nikki Kelly, Bryan Kirk and Corey Volt. “It’s an awesome event,” says Kincaid, who paddles for Kokatat and Dagger. “Not many events test both creek boating and freestyle.”

Spearheading this year’s event is the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association, highlighting Steamboat in the Summertime and Charlie’s Hole downtown. “The City based its successful recreational in-channel diversion water right (RICD) filing on the popular play features downtown, and this is just one way to help showcase what a world-class feature the town has,” says Paddling Life Publisher Eugene Buchanan. “Plus, it’s a great way to showcase and reward today’s best all-around paddlers.”
The event starts with a registration barbecue Sunday, May 27, at 5:30, followed by the creek race at 10 a.m. May 28 and the freestyle event at 1 p.m. The festivities will be followed by a party at Sunpies Bistro featuring local bands, beer and other surprises. As an added bonus for spectators and sponsors, this year’s event will also air as a half-hour TV special on Resort Sports Network. For more info, visit
