Blue Hill, ME – January 13, 2010 – Hydro-Photon, Inc., manufacturer of SteriPEN®, is pleased to announce that the company has been awarded a patent on the use of deep UV LEDs in portable, flow-through, water purification systems. This technology will open the way to a new generation of water purification products and will be especially useful in backpack-type hydration systems. When configured in-line in the hydration-pack’s drink tube, the purification module will provide virtually instantaneous microbiological purification – destroying bacteria, viruses and protozoa – as the user drinks.

This patented UV LED based purification technology provides numerous advantages to “on-the-go†users. Power consumption of the LEDs will be significantly lower than the currently used cold cathode fluorescent (CCFL) UV lamps. And, at the same time, the life of the LEDs will be many times greater than CCFL lamps. In addition, the UV LED’s are “instant-on†devices unlike CCFLs that take time to warm up to full output. This “instant-on†capability allows for virtually immediate treatment – as water passes through the purification module and into the user’s mouth.
The patent, issued by the US Patent and Trademark Office is entitled “UV LED based water purification module for intermittently operable flow-through hydration systems†(patent number 7,641,790).
