LAVAL, QUEBEC. April 29, 2014. If you own a Pelican boat, you’re not alone. In late March, Pelican International, the world’s leading plastic boat manufacturer, celebrated as its two-millionth boat came off the assembly line at the company’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Laval, Quebec – an impressive accomplishment for the company that began with twelve employees and one product that was available in only one color.
Founded in 1968, Pelican is renowned for its impressive selection of high-quality kayaks, canoes, stand-up paddle boards, fishing boats and pedal boats. From the first boat to come off its assembly line to its two-millionth, the company’s unwavering commitment to innovation, its investment in technology and its rigorous quality control standards, have made the company the clear leader in the industry.
For over 45 years, Pelican has proudly fulfilled its mission to make the enjoyment of the great outdoors accessible to enthusiasts of every age, ability level and budget. Today, Pelican offers four brands to suit every need:
• Pelican: In existence since 1970, the Pelican line is renowned for providing affordable family fun and a full range of durable, low-maintenance products, including a full line of generously-equipped recreational kayaks, stand-up paddle boards (SUPs), canoes, pedal boats, fishing boats, utility sleds and winter toys.
• Pelican Premium: Launched in 2013, the Pelican Premium line is designed for those who want to invest a little more in their kayak, but want the same exceptional value they have come to expect from Pelican. With hulls and outfitting inspired by higher end Elie kayaks, this line of kayaks offers unparalleled comfort and performance for the price.
• Elie: Launched in 2009, this line of recreational and touring kayaks is designed for more advanced paddlers who are looking for higher performance and sleeker designs.
• Lavika: Launched in 2010, the line includes a wide array of nautical accessories to enhance the on-water experience, including paddles, cockpit covers, dry bags, anchor kits, rod holders and more.
The Pelican name is synonymous with state-of-the-art manufacturing technology and continuous innovation. The company’s over 500,000 square-foot facility houses nine forming machines, including the world’s largest thermoforming machine, capable of building boats up to 18 feet long. Pelican ensures the quality of every boat produced on its 10 assembly lines by extruding its own plastic sheets and using unique racking on its pallets to protect finished products. The facility is also equipped with hand-held bar code readers to ensure the accuracy of every order.
Exclusive Processes and Materials
Pelican is the leading North American kayak manufacturer to use Twin Sheet Thermoforming (TST) technology, which produces a stiffer, stronger, lighter product than other manufacturing methods. The combination of Pelican’ TST process and its proprietary materials, including RAM-X™, RAM-X™ Premium and Poly-XR™, results in superior vessels that offer unparalleled rigidity, exceptional impact and breakage resistance, outstanding longevity and optimal safety.
In addition to superior performance and durability, Pelican watercraft look great on the water. The company’s exclusive designs are created by an in-house team of industrial designers and engineers, aided by expert paddlers like Olympic paddler, François Letourneau. Each vessel is rigorously tested and fine-tuned until optimal performance is achieved.
As a company whose products are designed for enjoying the great outdoors, Pelican takes major steps to minimize its environmental footprint at every stage of its operations. That is why it uses over 50% post-consumer materials in its polyethylene sheets, recycles an impressive 99.9% of its scrap materials, and during the winter months, heats its factory using the heat produced by its molding ovens.

Pelican has introduced twelve brand-new models for 2014, including the new tech-friendly Intrepid. Equipped with a smartphone holder in the dashboard, the Intrepid allows paddlers to view distance covered, time lapsed and number of strokes by running their favorite paddling app on their waterproofed phone.
