BOULDER, Colo. (Feb. 11, 2015) — PeopleForBikes, the movement to make riding better for everyone, announced the recipients of its latest round of Community Grants, with eight awards totaling more than $50,000.
Grants in this round ranged from $1,500 to $10,000 and will support infrastructure and advocacy initiatives.
The PeopleForBikes Community Grants Program has funded more than 300 projects since 1999, including bike lanes, paths, parks and advocacy programs. Grant recipients this round include:
The Lovell Chamber of Commerce (Lovell, WY): Awarded $1,500 for bike racks in key downtown locations, encouraging more people ride in this compact community. PeopleForBikes’ grant will help the Chamber design and install these custom racks by spring 2015.
The City of Center Line (Center Line, MI): Awarded $3,840 for the ‘Bike to Bus’ project, making it easier for residents and the local workforce to use their bikes to connect to transit by installing bike racks at each of the 37 bus stops in the city. While this inner ring Detroit suburb is small in geography (1.7 square miles), Center Line hopes to provide a model for neighboring communities by encouraging more travel by bike and bus.
Chicago Area Mountain Bikers (CAMBR) (Carpentersville, IL): Awarded $5,000 for the Andres Bike Park – Jump Line Project. This grant will continue the revitalization of the downtown park with the addition of beginner and intermediate jump lines. Once a dumping ground and site for gang activity, Andres Park has become a place where children, teens and adults can come together to ride bikes and have fun
The City of Montebello (Montebello, CA): Awarded $5,000 to support Montebello’s first open streets day in Spring 2015 with a downtown bike route and other activities such as a Kid Zone, Skateboard and Zumba Zone. The event, ‘Walk and Roll-Rediscover Montebello,’ continues the city’s investment in programs and projects to make the community more bikeable, walkable and the streets more vibrant.
T.R.U.S.T. South LA (Los Angeles, CA): Awarded $7,500 to help the Central Avenue corridor become more bike-friendly. This advocacy project aims to build community support for bicycle infrastructure while boosting ridership through pop-up demonstrations of improvements like bike lanes, bike parking, better crosswalks and park lets.
The Wisconsin Bike Federation (Milwaukee, WI): Awarded $7,500 for at least three open streets events—where streets are temporarily closed to motor vehicles—for summer and fall of 2015. The Bike Fed will partner with NEWaukee, the Cesar E. Chavez Business Improvement District, Clarke Square Neighborhood Initiative, Journey House, the City and other community organizations, using this grant award to match more than $25,000 in additional commitments.
Traverse Area Recreation & Transportation (TART) (Traverse City, MI): Awarded $10,000 to help add seven miles of multi-use trail through the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. When the multi-million dollar project is completed, the 27-mile Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail will link two communities and allow thousands of visitors to enjoy this spectacular area on foot or by bike.
Spirit Trail (Warrensburg, MO): Awarded $10,000 for a multi-use trail stretching from Warrensburg, MO through the Missouri State Park at Knob Noster and ending near Whiteman Air Force Base. The grant joins federal, state and local funding in creation of a facility that will extend nearly 12 miles and provide a safe place to ride for residents throughout Johnson County.
