Ultrarunner has averaged over 70 miles a day for 40 days straight.
GOLETA, CALIF. (October 20, 2016) — On Sept. 12, accomplished ultrarunner Pete Kostelnick set off from San Francisco to break the 36-year-old Guinness Book of World Records time for the “fastest crossing of America by foot.” Kostelnick, who is sponsored by HOKA ONE ONE, a division of Deckers Brands (NYSE: DECK), has less than 400 miles to go, and is on pace to make history with plans arrive in New York City on Monday, Oct. 24.

Wearing his favorite HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 3 shoes, Kostelnick, a 29-year-old financial analyst from Lincoln, Nebraska, has run over 2,600 miles so far, averaging 70 miles per day. The current transcontinental record, set by Frank Giannio, Jr. in 1980, is 46 days, 8 hours and 36 minutes.
“We are incredibly excited to support Pete’s run across America. He started running in order to improve his health a few years ago and has quickly risen among the ranks of ultrarunners,” said Mike McManus, HOKA ONE ONE Senior Sports Marketing Manager. “I’m amazed by his singular focus of 70-plus mile days per day. We’re cheering for him as he resets the standard of what’s possible. This is inspirational and mind-blowing!”
Kostelnick has run through thunderstorms, snowstorms and 35 mile-per-hour winds, and over three mountain passes at more than 9,000 feet on his route to New York City. One of his support vehicles was recently totaled when a truck slammed into it; thankfully no one was hurt. Despite these challenges, he has kept a consistent pace — consuming at least 13,000 calories a day.
Kostelnick set a course record this summer at one of the world’s toughest races, the STYR Labs Badwater 135, and is the top seed in the 2017 International Association of Ultrarunners’ 24-Hour World Championships.
