PETZL’S ULTRA-LIGHT SIROCCO HELMET WINS MULTIPLE OUTDOOR INDUSTRY AWARDS FOR INNOVATION

(Salt Lake City, Utah) Petzl, leader in hands-free lighting and equipment for the vertical world, is proud to announce that its new SIROCCO ultra-light helmet, made with Monobloc construction, has won several outdoor industry awards for innovation, including a GOLD award for innovation at the OutDoor Show in Friedrichshafen, Germany, and Outside Magazine’s “Gear of the Show” award at the 2012 Outdoor Retailer Summer Market in Salt Lake City, Utah. In addition, the influential gear blog, the Gear Junkie, also gave the SIROCCO a “Best in Show” award.

Minimalism without compromise
The SIROCCO helmet uses an all-foam Monobloc construction and a minimal nylon-webbing adjustment system to drop weight to an absolute minimum. Despite weighing only 165g (5.8oz), the SIROCCO is strong and durable, easily passing all UIAA and CE climbing helmet tests. This unique balance is achieved via expanded polypropylene foam (EPP), a resilient material used in the impact zones of automobiles and known for its exceptional energy-absorption properties. In addition, plentiful ventilation, removable foam padding, and a patented magnetic buckle that allow for one-handed closure all make for an exceptional wearing experience.

OutDoor INDUSTRY GOLD AWARD
On July 12, in association of the OutDoor trade show in Friedrichshafen, Germany, the SIROCCO won the OutDoor INDUSTRY GOLD award for outstanding innovation and design achievement. “Innovation can be reflected in the use of new materials, in specific reductions or in the successful improvement of an important detail – the industry is always blazing new trails,” said the judges of the award. Stefan Reisinger, OutDoor project head and member of the Messe Friedrichshafen board of directors further explained that “Winning such an award is an official endorsement of a product’s creativity, innovation and quality.”

The jury had this to say about the new Petzl helmet: “With the SIROCCO, Petzl was able to reduce the weight of climbing helmets to a mere 165 grams. Absolutely amazing – and without any compromise in terms of ventilation or wearing comfort.”

Outside Magazine’s Gear of the Show
The SIROCCO was one of only a handful of products to receive Outside Magazine’s “Gear of the Show” award at the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market, which took place August 2-5 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Editors for the magazine said that “[EPP] is so tough that Petzl decided to not put a reinforcing layer over it, and the result is one of the lightest climbing helmets in the world. At just 5.8 ounces, it weighs up to half as much as a typical climbing lid.”

Gearjunkie.com’s Best in Show
The Gear Junkie (www.gearjunkie.com) recognizes products that “represent true innovation in the outdoors industry and some of the neatest new gear ever made.” The editors at Gear Junkie said of the SIRROCO, “As if being blaze orange wasn’t enough, Petzl went over the top in the design of its SIROCCO climbing helmet, a pliable foam dome protector that is a weird mix of spongy and strong.”
