POC, a leading manufacturer of skiing and cycling helmets, apparel and accessories, is proud to partner with the High Fives Foundation to produce the film “#HelmetsAreCool” in order to raise awareness about helmets and their effectiveness in preventing concussions, head injuries and traumatic brain injuries.
“#HelmetsAreCool” is the third installment of five for the High Fives Foundation B.A.S.I.C.S. (Being. Aware. Safe. In. Critical. Situations.) Program Service. The previous two B.A.S.I.C.S. films have focused on the following: the five critical mistakes that winter action sports athletes have made before suffering a life-altering injury; and backcountry safety, with a concentration on avalanche awareness.
Tonight at 7 p.m., the world-premiere screening of “#HelmetsAreCool” will take place at California 89, located at 10156 Donner Pass Road, Truckee, California. Tickets are $10 at the door. Following the “#HelmetsAreCool” screening, the Sherpas Cinema 2013 feature film “Into the Mind” will be shown in the Lake Tahoe region for the first time.

“By teaming up with POC, the Foundation hopes to raise awareness about helmets and their effectiveness in preventing concussions, head injuries and traumatic brain injuries,” said Roy Tuscany, High Fives Foundation Executive Director. “Helmets Are Cool is the third documentary in the B.A.S.I.C.S. five-part series. The film features four athletes’ powerful stories about helmets and head injuries while also highlighting POC’s mission to do everything they can to possibly save lives or to reduce consequences of accidents for gravity sports athletes.”
Doors to this all ages event will open at 6pm and tickets will be available on a first come, first serve basis. Blankets and warm clothes are suggested while heat lamps will be on site for the fall evening.
POC helmets are highlighted in the film demonstrating cutting-edge industry safety standards. POC is leading the way in helmet safety by utilizing MIPS®, a unique technology developed to decrease rotational violence inflicted on the brain from a crash.
After the screening on Oct. 17, the High Fives Foundation will present “#HelmetsAreCool” to schools, ski and snowboard teams and clubs, as well as youth oriented organizations in the Lake Tahoe, Northern California, Utah, Colorado and New England areas. The Foundation anticipates the video reaching an audience of more than 55,000 people. For those that cannot make tonight’s premiere, the video will be available via www.basics.highfivesfoundation.org at 5 p.m. PST tonight.

About B.A.S.I.C.S.
In 2010, professional skier (and B.A.S.I.C.S. Program Director) JT Holmes met with the High Fives Foundation in regards to the extraordinary inflation of numbers of athletes in the last 20 years that have suffered a serious injury or died while participating or competing in winter action sports. The concept that was created stems from a consensus that more and more athletes are pushing the boundaries of progression in winter action sports. There are very few resources available that take the necessary steps to educate athletes about the training and preparation needed to not only stay safe but also succeed in such sports.
