Denver, Colo. – Polartec and First Descents, a non-profit that provides free outdoor adventure programs for young adults (ages 18-39) fighting cancer, have teamed up to launch the Out Living It Contest. The program challenges college students across the country to organize fundraising events in support of young adult cancer fighters with chances to win prize packages of gear and apparel from Polartec and other sponsors valued at over $5,000.
“One in 100 college students are cancer survivors. Imagine trying to battle cancer during your late teens or early twenties with all of the other challenges that exist at that age,” says First Descents founder Brad Ludden. “At First Descents we focus our programming on teaching our participants to defy their diagnosis through outdoor challenges like surfing, kayaking or climbing and hopefully continue to use outdoor activity as part of their ongoing treatment and survivorship. Partners like Polartec and the incredible folks across the country that we have fundraising for us are the reason First Descents is able to serve over 500 young adults a year.”
The Polartec Out Living It Contest encourages college students to organize fundraising challenges on their campuses in support of First Descents. These challenges can be anything from a 5K fun run to a golf tournament, a costume relay, a kickball tournament and more. Once registered with First Descents, each team will receive a custom fundraising page that can be promoted and managed throughout the challenge.

“We’re proud to partner with First Descents in this effort,” says Polartec’s global marketing director, Allon Cohne. “Cancer touches the lives of millions of people every year, but young adults with a cancer diagnosis face a unique set of challenges. We’d love to see thousands of college students across the country join in this contest, and we’re excited to offer a really cool prize as an added incentive.”
The top three fundraising teams that raise the most money for First Descents by noon on December 15, 2013, will receive impressive prize packages from sponsors including Polartec, Teva, Dagger Kayaks, KIND Snacks, Smith Optics,GoPro and more.
