Pulitzer-Winning Journalist Accepts Post as Editor-in-Chief of Sierra Magazine.
SAN FRANCISCO, CA. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Bob Sipchen takes the helm as Editor-in-Chief of Sierra magazine and Deputy National Communications Director of the Sierra Club, America’s oldest, largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization. “Sipchen’s unusually broad experience as a reporter, columnist, author, editor and multimedia innovator makes him very well-suited for his new responsibilities at this invigorating moment in environmental journalism,†said Kim Haddow, National Communications Director.
While at the Los Angeles Times, Sipchen launched and edited a widely admired weekly Outdoors section, edited the paper’s Sunday opinion section, served as senior editor at the paper’s Sunday magazine, pioneered high-profile Web projects, and wrote a popular column about the magazine world. Sipchen won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize and Society of Professional Journalists’ Sigma Delta Chi award for editorial writing (with Alex Raksin) for a series about people with mental illness and addictions living on America’s streets. Sipchen also shared in the paper’s Pulitzer for its team coverage of the 1992 riots in Los Angeles. Sipchen has freelanced for national magazines including National Geographic Traveler and Men’s Journal. For nine years he served as adjunct professor at Occidental College in Los Angeles, and last year he was recognized by UC Santa Barbara when he was given their Distinguished Alumni award.
An enthusiastic surfer, backpacker, fly-fisher, trail runner, skier, snow boarder, mountain bicyclist, and trained river guide, Sipchen is passionate about nature and protecting the environment. “As Sierra’s National Advertising Director, my sales staff and I are eager to begin working with Bob,†said Kristi Rummel. “He brings his active, outdoor lifestyle enhanced with a commitment to preserving the planet and it will be reflected in the pages of Sierra.â€
