Hakuna Wear has released an entire line of recycled plastic swimwear in a variety of styles including one pieces and two pieces with the option of high-waist or low-waist bottoms. All styles come with hidden pockets in the back or side of the bottoms and the low-waist styles come are made with Bikini Lock Technology.

Bikini lock technology is the addition of a bungee and toggle to tighten the bikini easily on-the-go. Low-waist bottoms are made with the technology, but they also have the option of adding it to the bikini tops which is especially helpful for women with larger cup sizes and smaller chest sizes to really lock things in.
“After a surf trip where my bottoms came off on every duck dive, I knew something needed to change.” explains designer and founder, Jessica Boynton. Since then, she’s gotten to work making prototypes – searching for the right ethically and environmentally made materials, a resilient design and suit that lasts, and a comfortable fit.

The fabric they decided on is a compression polyester blend made from recycled plastic water bottles, with UPF 50+ protection, and with spandex that is chlorine resistant so the suits last when worn in the pool or hot-tub. The fabric is then sublimation printed with a pattern using less water than traditional dyeing methods. The bikinis are locally sewn and all packaging is recycled and recyclable.
The high-waist bikini and one piece has a 3×4” pocket big enough to bring a granola bar if you know you will be out for a while, or wax and sunscreen and contains a key loop to keep your valuables safe. Even Hakuna Wear’s cheekiest bikini bottoms, the ‘Miho’ and the ‘Sunset’, have a 4×1” key pocket at the base of the Bikini Lock bungee.

All bikinis are available in two styles with reversible colorways. Meaning, you get four bikinis in one set. Both the ‘Sunset’ and ‘Cloud Break’ two-pieces come in Galaxy Blue and Rainbow Warrior Black with Tech Mesh detailing. Our Tech Mesh detail is strategically placed to flatter all body types and accentuate your warrior curves. The ‘Miho’ low-waist bottoms, ‘Jeju’ high-waist bottoms and ‘Kare Kare’ sport top come in a Peachy Hibiscus and Peachy Storm color block for something a little more classic and bright.
Hakuna Wear is inspired by surf communities around the globe and is working towards creating a collaborative space to both support other designers and combine marketing forces. The brand sees the importance of creating stronger, more sustainable suits and supporting brands with a similar ethos.

About Hakuna Wear
Hakuna Wear was started in Encinitas, CA after an unempowering tropical surf trip filled with wardrobe malfunctions and no pockets for a hotel key or cash to get around. Our founder, Jessica Boynton, took her love of surfing, her PhD in chemistry, and her passion for fashion to develop innovative swimwear with no worries. Our suits have pockets to stash your essentials, are surf-tested in overhead surf to stay put, and are made with recycled and plant-based fabrics. All designed in the heart of San Diego, California, USA.
