Red Bull Bay Climb Set to Take Over Potrero Hill

Nico Deportago-Cabrera, Kym “Nonstop” Perfetto and Chas Christiansen prepare for Inaugural Uphill Race on September 16

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. — September 6, 2017

In less than two weeks, Red Bull Bay Climb will take over an iconic hill in San Francisco with athletes from vastly different cycling disciplines to battle it out in an uphill, chain-busting sprint. The event features a bracket style format with riders racing shoulder-to-shoulder straight up three steep blocks of historic Potrero Hill. The cycling industry and cyclists from across the US have come together to support the inaugural event, ensuring September 16th is a day to remember for athletes, spectators and the Bay Area.

Fixed gear athlete Nico Deportago-Cabrera has thrown his hat in the ring for this year’s event and will be making his way out from Chicago to compete, “I’m excited for a lot of reasons: as an athlete in Chicago, the only ‘hills’ we have are the brutal headwinds that come off of Lake Michigan. I’m excited about REAL hills. I’m also super tight with the MASH crew in San Francisco and I’m excited to race against them in their hometown where they cut their teeth. It’s also my first time racing in San Francisco, a place I’ve grown to know and love.” Hot on Nico’s heels will be Chas Christiansen, “Captain of Stoke”, a San Francisco local who along with many other Bay Area athletes is looking to take home the win in this new racing format.

Other competitors to keep an eye on include Kym “Nonstop” Perfetto who is looking to take her unique style and athleticism straight to the top of the podium. Red Bull Bike Messenger athlete Austin Horse will also be in attendance, and although he’ll be sidelined with an injury, Horse can always be counted on to provide some color on the microphone while the heats are in action.

The event itself is as unique in its construction as it is difficult. The race length is just 0.32 miles but with an average grade of 15%, with the steepest grade over the 3 uphill sections clocking in at a lung crushing 21%, this fast and furious contest is not for the faint of heart. With only human-powered two-wheel bikes allowed on course, this is a true test of will, grit and gumption.

The cycling industry has rallied around this inaugural event. The team at Mission Crit have made an enormous contribution, ensuring that all competitors and spectators on race day will have a great experience. Anchor Brewing, which sits a crank’s turn from the beginning of the start-line will be supporting the official after party at Thee Parkside. Ass Savers, Cadence Collection, Chrome, GIRO and SRAM have all provided prizing for those who make it to the podium and ASSOS have produced the coveted winner’s jerseys and will be generously covering the women’s categories entrance fees. Additionally, Camelback and Cognition Cyclery will provide water and tech support for all riders on the day.
