Industry Reel Rock Film Tour Premiere
8 p.m., Sat., Aug. 12, at Rose Wagner Center
During Outdoor Retailer Summer Market in Salt Lake City
SALT LAKE CITY, August 2006 – Big Up Productions and Sender Films are teaming up to produce the first major international climbing film tour, with W.L. Gore & Associates’ WINDSTOPPER® brand as the title sponsor.
The Reel Rock Film Tour, produced by Big Up Productions and Sender Films, will feature two groundbreaking new climbing films by two top producers and award winning film producers in the industry: Dosage Volume IV, by Josh and Brett Lowell, and First Ascent, by Peter Mortimer. Events will be held this September and October at roughly 75 venues across the U.S., with additional tours in Canada and Europe.
An invitation-only premiere party is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12 at Salt Lake’s Rose Wagner Center for the Performing Arts (138 West 300 South) during the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market in Salt Lake. Raffle donations will be solicited and matched by sponsors to benefit Friends of Indian Creek (friendsofindiancreek.org), an international crack climbing destination in southern Utah. Seating begins at 8 p.m. with Timmy O’Neill, considered the Robin Williams of climbing – one the world’s funniest (and fastest) climbers – taking the stage at 8:30 to introduce filmmakers, climbers, Jason Keith of FOIC and to raffle off prizes before the films begin at 9:00 p.m.
The Reel Rock shows will be high-energy events for climbers and mountain enthusiasts, incorporating gear giveaways, athlete appearances and signings, fundraising for The Access Fund and local causes, DVD sales, and promotional opportunities for national and local sponsors. Many of the larger tour events will be hosted by Timmy O’Neill.
Sponsors of the Reel Rock Film Tour Premiere Party include W.L. Gore & Associates, Petzl, Climbing Magazine, and Montbell.
About the Films
Dosage Vol 4 – Big Up’s Dosage series is the definitive annual portrait of climbing’s state-of-the-art. Volume IV follows the biggest names in sport climbing, trad climbing, and bouldering as they make historic ascents at spectacular locations around the world. Director Josh Lowell is a leading creator of climbing films. His company, Big Up Productions (bigUPproductions.com), Pound Ridge, N.Y., has released seven films, including the top-selling titles in the industry. Lowell’s Dosage Volume II was the winner of six international film festival awards and was featured in Sports Illustrated and National Public Radio.
First Ascent – First Ascent is the latest release from Sender Films (senderfilms.com), and director/producer Peter Mortimer. Considered his most ambitious film to date, First Ascent captures the awe-inspiring exploits of today’s top rock climbers as they lay siege to impossibly steep faces and soaring, remote alpine walls in pursuit of climbing’s pinnacle achievement – the first ascent. The climbs depicted in the film range from high Himalayan peaks to deep water soloing on the coast of Thailand, and from the sobering heights of the Black Canyon to Timmy “Urban Ape†O’Neill’s monkey business on the buildings of Hollywood.
