Boulder, CO – Spyder, the skiwear brand that’s outfitted the U.S. Ski Team in performance race suits and training outerwear since 1989, created custom alpine race suits to honor 2008 and 2009 World Cup overall champion Lindsey Vonn. Spyder worked with Vonn on developing a unique design for each stop on the World Cup circuit. The exclusive designs recognize the athlete’s status and individualism, yet nod to the US Ski Team graphics the rest of the elite team will don during the season.
“We have a great ongoing relationship with Lindsey, so these suits are our own way to acknowledge her unparalleled accomplishments,” Spyder product director Phil Shettig said. “To have an American reign for two seasons as overall champion is outstanding. This is our way of celebrating her individual successes as part of the larger team.”
Vonn will not have one, but eight different suits to wear at World Cup events. The suits step beyond the ski team uniform graphic design and incorporate patterns, plaids, and vibrant colors that Vonn finds appealing. Spyder will not publicly release the colors or designs prior to each race, allowing curiosity to build before Vonn emerges from each start gate, just as anticipation about her performance builds.
Vonn, who had custom Spyder suits last season, is thrilled about the continuation of her winning streak and a fresh look for upcoming races. “I think it’s a great way to generate more excitement in our sport, and I’m pumped to step into the starting gate in the new designs,” she said.
“It’s great to see this athletic achievement recognized by our team sponsor Spyder,” said Tom Kelly, the U.S. Ski Team communications director. “The effort Spyder makes to acknowledge Lindsey’s achievement is a tribute to their investment in our performance and our overall partnership.”
Vonn is among the greatest female skiers in U.S. history. She is the first American woman to win in four separate World Cup disciplines in one day. She is the only American woman to have won two World Cup overall titles, and also has two downhill titles plus a super G title. Vonn has more World Cup wins than any American woman and has four World Championship medals, including two gold from 2009.
