LEXINGTON, MA (April 22, 2009) –Saucony, Inc., a leading global supplier of performance athletic footwear and apparel, today announced that they have joined The Conservation Alliance, a group of outdoor industry companies that provide funding to community-based programs dedicated to protecting threatened wild and natural areas for their habitat and recreation value.
“Runners have always enjoyed a special connection to the environment,†said Richie Woodworth, president of Saucony. “It is only appropriate that we use this special day—Earth Day—to announce our commitment to join our peers in support of the Conservation Alliance’s continued efforts to preserve the natural habitats in our communities nationwide. Running is the ultimate outdoor sport, where a good trail, park or back road creates the perfect landscape for our activity. As runners and as a running brand we are passionate about protecting those training grounds for runners everywhere,†added Woodworth.
The Alliance, founded in 1989 by industry leaders REI, Patagonia, The North Face, and Kelty, now has more than 165 member companies and has contributed more than $7 million to conservation projects throughout North America.
Membership in the Alliance is open to companies representing all aspects of the outdoor industry. Membership annual dues go toward the Alliance’s central fund, and the Alliance donates those funds to grassroots conservation organizations. The Alliance’s grants have helped organizations in their work to protect more than 39 million acres of land, stop or remove 27 dams, and preserve access to 17,000 miles of waterways and several climbing areas. The Alliance plans to donate $900,000 in 2009. For complete information on the Conservation Alliance, see www.conservationalliance.com.
