Based in the historic Old Port district of Portland, Maine, Sea Bags was founded in 2006 by Hannah Kubiak and Beth Shissler. The company’s three founding principles included being “green” in product and practice; giving back to the community; and a commitment to Maine-based domestic manufacturing.

Those cornerstones have proved to be potent, as in less than five years the company has grown from two to 20 employees; expanded its retail base from a single door to partnerships with major international brands such as JCrew, Sperry Topsider and Tommy Bahama; given more than $50,000 to Maine-based charities; and become a model for “green” businesses everywhere.

“We’ve worked very hard to get Sea Bags to where it is today, and we’re eager to see what the next five years will bring,” said Shissler, whose company is currently in the process of a 5,000 square foot expansion.

Pale Morning Media (www.palemorningmedia.com) is a public relations and creative communications firm with offices in Maine and Vermont. The agency was founded in Portland in 2001, and currently represents clients in the outdoor, travel, fitness and lifestyle markets.

“Once you visit the Sea Bags storefront and headquarters in the Old Port, you can’t help but become a believer,” said Drew Simmons, president of Pale Morning Media. “As much success as they’ve had, there’s still a huge amount of people out there who’ve yet to discover this remarkable story.”

As all Sea Bags sails are recycled, each creation is truly unique, with creased personality and signs of hard sailing that can never be re-created or replaced. Their bags use rope handles with a splice and whip at the ends, a nautical knot skill perfected by the Sea Bags manufacturing crew. The nautical theme is also reflected in other designs, such as their board shorts which feature a sailing “tell-tale” on the side pocket.

Sea Bags growing product line includes totes, bags, pillows, wine bags, coasters, change purses, wallets and shave kits. Sea Bags creates custom pieces for people with a creative urge, adding numbers, letters or a picture for only $50. Sea Bags also hosts a regular auction at SeaBags.com for one-of-a-kind creations, featuring sails with unique histories.

New for 2012, SeaBags is making Summer Satchels, board shorts for men, iPad and laptop cases, and a few other surprises to be released in the coming months.

Sea Bags are available at SeaBags.com; at their retail storefronts in Portland and Freeport, Maine; and through JCrew, Sperry Topsider and Tommy Bahama.
