SECOND RUNNING BOOM, ANATOMICAL ENGINEERING,
OPENS DOORS FOR CW-X ENDURANCE APPAREL
NEW YORK (Nov. 20, 2013) – Over the past 20 years, every year except 2003 set a new high in the number of finishers in U.S. running events, and 2012 continued the upward trend with a record of more than 15.5 million finishers, according to Running USA. Since the mid-1990s, this period of the sport’s historic growth is designated the Second Running Boom by the non-profit trade group (runningusa.org).
This growth has created an unprecedented business opportunity for companies such as Wacoal Sports Science Corp. (WSSC), makers of anatomically-engineered CW-X Endurance Apparel.
The New York-based manufacturer of running tights, tops and bras, just ended its best October ever, with business up seven percent over the previous best October since the company started in the U.S. in 2002.
According to Leisure Trends Group, CW-X is one of the top three men’s and women’s tights sold in specialty running stores for the 12 months ending September 2013. It registers an 18 percent dollar share in the men’s category, and 15.7 percent share in women’s, despite an average retail price of over $90 – almost twice that of the competition.
Anecdotally, CW-X running tights, featuring targeted support technology for muscles and joints, have increased in popularity among runners in the 2013 New York Marathon. For the past four years the company has stationed two employees at two different locations on First Avenue to count the number of CW-X tights that race by. In November 2013, the number of runners wearing the company’s iconic tights was up 18 percent over 2011 (there was no race in 2012).
CW-X is now available in over 1,100 U.S. and Canada retail locations, and has a running specialty retail market penetration rate of 58 percent – more stores now than at any other time in its 11-year history. The brand is also making inroads internationally. In fact, beyond Japan (home base of WSSC’s parent company, Wacoal Corp.), the product is currently available throughout parts of Central and South America, Australia, and Western Europe, where it is on fire in Iceland, the land of fire and ice, according to former international and collegiate track athlete John L.A. Wilson, president and COO, Wacoal Sports Science Corp.
“We believe CW-X is on the right track with science-based apparel that’s similar to ‘equipment’ for the anatomy. A patented Support Web derived from kinesiology taping techniques reduces muscle fatigue, provides better stability and balance, reduces knee impact, and makes the body run more efficiently,” he says.
“As running shoes become more advanced, CW-X Conditioning Wear carries the science of support and stability up to the rest of the body to help athletes perform at maximum efficiency.”
