WASHINGTON, D.C. – July 5, 2007 – If you need the most current demographics on today’s sports participants, the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association (SGMA) has what you need. Detailed background information on sports participation patterns in the U.S. can be found in Volumes 1, 2 and 3 of SGMA’s USA Sports & Fitness Participation Study (2007 edition). These volumes contain a statistical analysis of today’s casual and core athletes/recreational sports enthusiasts. Volumes 1, 2 or 3 provide the reader with relevant data as it applies to fitness activities, team sports, outdoor activities, individual pursuits, and racquet sports.
Volume I — The Fitness-Aerobic, Strength, Conditioning Study is a 168-page report on participation in 27 activities. It is divided into aerobic, strength and conditioning activities.
Volume 2 — The Team Sports Study reports on 22 team sports in 136 pages.
Volume 3 — The Individual, Outdoor and Racquet Study consists of 24 outdoor-related pursuits, 5 in racquets sports and 15 in individual sports. It contains 269 pages.
For any given sport/activity in Volume 1, 2 or 3, there are many demographic breakdowns for total and “frequent†participation based on gender, age, household income, geographic region of residence, population center, and level of education. There are also special statistics which reveal levels of participation in terms of days played within the last year, number of years of participation, average number of days played in 2006, participation in other sports/activities, and ratings of most frequently used venues.
