Sierra Designs, an authentic technical leader in developing innovative outdoor products including tents, sleeping bags and clothing for “people in the knowâ€, today announced its Asp tent has won the “Best of Adventure Gear†award from National Geographic Adventure magazine.
National Geographic Adventure’s approach to its Best of Gear awards differs from other magazines in its creation of an advisory board of 45 of the country’s leading outdoor retailers. The board’s contribution was two-fold: to weigh in on products that in its opinion are innovative, and to report on what products consumers are particularly excited about in the marketplace. The awards were presented on November 14, 2006 at a gala event held at National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C. and are featured in the December 2006/January 2007 issue (on newsstands Nov. 28). This is the fourth year that National Geographic Adventure magazine has named Best of Adventure Gear.
“We are thrilled that our Asp tent has been given such a prestigious award and recognized by such an influential outdoor publication,†said Paul Gagner, president of Sierra Designs. “Our goals match that of The National Geographic Society to inspire people to care about the planet and experience the natural and cultural wonders of the world in exciting ways. Our mantra is to incorporate ethical, sustainable and competitive business practices that reflect our commitment to the environment and our community.â€
The Asp tent, named after a poisonous African snake, is an ultralight 2-person shelter (also comes in a 3-person option). The tent weighs only 4 pounds, 14 ounces and is made of a 40-denier nylon on the body to reduce weight and a 70-denier nylon on the floor for strength. Constructed with the award-winning Reverse Combi Technology, the Asp has 34 square feet of livable space as well as two doors and excellent venting capabilities. This is a great ultralight shelter for backcountry, beach and river trips as the Quick Pitch Swivel Hub locks the pole sections in place and makes for an extremely easy set-up.
