Just before suspending operations in mid-October, the Alpinist magazine editors took the time to award the Sierra Designs’ Convert 2 tent with their final, prestigious Mountain Standards award.
According to Alpinist magazine, The Mountain Standards reviews apply Alpinist’s tradition of excellence and authenticity to gear reviews by providing unbiased, candid feedback and anecdotal commentary to equipment tested (hard) in the field. The panel that judges the awards is composed of climbers who use the gear every day as part of their work and play. Only the gear they would actually buy themselves, at retail price, qualifies for the Alpinist Mountain Standards award.
In their review of the Convert 2 tent, Alpinist magazine’s editors said, “In this day and age, it’s necessary that we, as consumers, choose more environmentally sensitive products whenever possible. It’s good to see a well-known, 43-year-old company take initiative—and it’s partly why this reasonably priced, well-designed tent easily won the Mountain Standards award of excellence.â€
Committed to its Green Effectsâ„¢ program, the Sierra Designs in-house green team created the Convert 2 tent with Drizoneâ„¢, a solvent-free waterproof breathable laminate. In addition, the tent uses PVC-free seam tape and DAC Featherlite NSL poles. DAC has created a process that allows Sierra Designs to use less phosphoric and nitric acid in its anodizing process.
“While we are saddened to hear the news about Alpinist magazine’s decision to suspend operations due to this current, nationwide financial turmoil, we are very proud to receive the Mountain Standards award,†said Paul Gagner, president of Sierra Designs. “The Convert 2 is the ultimate lightweight Alpine climbing tent in the Sierra Designs collection and our product development team certainly deserves this recognition.â€
The Sierra Designs product development team made the commitment to reduce the overall footprint of its tent, sleeping bag and apparel manufacturing by taking several important steps. One of these steps was the widespread use of Drizone, Sierra Designs’ proprietary solvent-free, waterproof breathable fabric. Crafting technical tents is a challenge in itself, but incorporating green technologies without sacrificing performance is the real test. You can find Drizone throughout the entire Sierra Designs product line – in tents like the Convert 2, sleeping bags like the Echo 0, and performance apparel like the Cyclone Eco Jacket.
