Sierra Magazine Uncovers How To Ski Steep Cliffs Without Killing Yourself

November/December issue plunges into the thrill of skiing couloirs and conquering fear

Other features include the link between sushi and mercury poisoning; Outings to Alaska and beyond; the healing power of the great outdoors; and The Green Life

(SAN FRANCISCO) – The November/December 2011 issue of Sierra Magazine, the official magazine of the Sierra Club, showcases the thrill-seeking, high-adrenaline rush of skiing couloirs, snow galleys that plunge like elevator shafts between rock cliffs. Stunning photography illustrates the danger and the adventure of extreme skiing, and documents one man’s journey while he conquers his fears.

This season, pile on the layers with apparel that will keep you warm underneath, in between and on top. In “Warmth, From Inside Out” contributor Steve Casimiro finds the warmest layers of the season so you can continue enjoying all your favorite winter activities.

Discover the true meaning of “immensity” on an epic adventure in Alaska and Arctic Canada, where travelers will partake in backpacking, rafting, kayaking and fishing voyages. Sierra Club National Outings releases 2012 schedule with these and hundreds of other trips in the lower 48 and around the world.

Other articles include Sierra contributor Dashka Slater’s piece, “This Much Mercury…” on the effects of ingesting too much mercury, by way of perennial fish favorites tuna and swordfish, and former Sierra intern Natalya Savka’s look at how injured war vets are finding solace outdoors in “Seeking Higher Ground.” Flip to “The Green Life” for an assortment of fresh, cold-weather comfort foods from Todd English and other cooking connoisseurs, gift ideas that breathe new life into the holidays and a conversation with polar explorer Eric Larsen.
