Sierra Magazine Features the Best in Adventure Travel

San Francisco, CA—For the second year in a row, Sierra Club Outings–the environmental organization’s adventure travel program–was awarded Best Adventure Travel Companies on Earth by the editors of National Geographic Adventure. Travel companies were rated on quality of service, sustainability, spirit of adventure, education and client satisfaction.

Sierra Club Outings scored in the high 90s in all categories with an overall score of 96.73. They received the highest score of the top ten adventure travel companies selected from many other entrants in the category of Hiking & Trekking–Operate on multiple continents and specialize in trekking. Sierra Club Outings was also honored in 2008 with this same award, demonstrating their continuous commitment to the highest standards of sustainable adventure travel.

According to National Geographic Adventure’s website, “John Muir wrote that if people could ‘hear the trees speak for themselves, all difficulties in the way of forest preservation would vanish.’ Sierra Club Outings carries out its founder’s ideals by introducing clients to the pristine corners of every continent, from the needle rock formations of Corsica to the Himalayan foothills of Sikkim.”

In their 2009 Adventure with a Cause trip catalog, Outings lists some of the features of their program that show their “commitment to the planet.” They include: low-impact trip activities, teaching low-impact travel guidelines, group transportation where possible, highest quality travel carbon offsets, service trips that contribute 25,000 volunteer hours annually to support National Park and Forest Service projects, and Inner City Outings which takes 13,000 urban youth outdoors for wilderness adventure experiences every year.

SIERRA magazine features Sierra Club Outings trip listings in five of six issues every year. In 2009, the annual Outings trip catalog in January/February includes 50+ pages of base camp, backpack, bicycle, canoe & kayak, family, lodge, ski, sled dog, snowshoe, raft, service trips and supported trekking. Destinations featured: Continental U.S. & Canada, Alaska & Arctic Canada, Hawaii & Caribbean and foreign trips in Asia, Europe, South and Central America, Mexico, Africa, New Zealand and Antarctica.

SIERRA’s March/April 2009 issue includes the 13th Annual Reader Travel Contest in print and online as well as Sierra Club Outings Spring 2010 International Trip listing.
