(Paris, France – July 30, 2018) – Science in Sport, official nutrition partner of Team Sky, is pleased to congratulate Geraint Thomas (GBR) on winning the 2018 Tour de France. This is the first Grand Tour victory for the Welsh rider who also earned wins on stages 11 and 12. Sky’s defending champion, Chris Froome (GBR), finished third after riding in support of Thomas.

This is Team Sky’s sixth Tour de France win. The team also won the 2018 Giro d’Italia and the 2017 Vuelta a Espana.

“We are extremely proud of the result Team Sky has earned with Geraint,” said, Ashley Read, marketing director of Science in Sport. “Our work with Team Sky has lead to numerous breakthroughs in sports nutrition and human performance, as we find new ways to fuel and hydrate athletes. Given Team Sky’s commitment to realizing marginal gains and our passion for maximizing athletic achievement, we have been able to work closely together toward the goal of attaining the highest results in the world’s most difficult races. We’re incredibly proud that our partnership has yielded another marquee victory.”

Science in Sport is Team Sky’s official nutrition partner, and works with each athlete to ensure that their fueling strategy is optimized during training, recovery, and racing. Team Sky athletes have access to the full range of Science in Sport products, including GO Isotonic Energy Gels, GO Energy Bars, and the new-to-market Beta Fuel.

Beta Fuel, designed for long endurance events at least 2.5 hours, was especially important during the Tour de France. The drink, which delivers 80 grams of carbohydrate, 20 mmol/L of sodium, and 500 ml of fluid without causing any stomach upset was used by Team Sky riders throughout the Tour de France.

“In order to win the Tour de France, multiple factors must be managed,” said Sir Dave Brailsford, Team Sky Principal. “Rider nutrition is one of the most important factors, as a small mistake could lead to an athlete under-performing. Working in collaboration with SiS on nutrition, enables us to combined expertise, and their willingness to develop specialized products like Beta Fuel, ensures that our riders get the nutrients they need during a demanding race like the Tour de France. Our team performed extremely well in this event, and once again our fuelling strategy played a central role.”
