American Adventure Sports retail store located in Greensburg, PA will now be renting stand-up paddleboards for day and multi-day use.
A stand-up paddleboard resembles a surfboard but is slightly longer and wider for stability. They have rudders on the bottom for stability and a gripping material on the top for added support for the user. A longer canoe paddle is used for propulsion, making it a cross between surfing and kayaking.

Boards can be rented for $20 an hour or for the whole day for $50 (two for $90). Rentals will be available from 8 AM to 7 PM and multi-day rentals are available for $45 per day per board. Groups up to six can be accommodated with advanced notice. Reservations can be made at the AAS store or by calling at 724-205-6450. Personal floatation devices and paddles will be included.

They are lightweight, high quality Epoxy Pau Hana 10.8 Malibu stand up Paddle Boards that are also available for purchase afterwards if desired. The money paid for rental will even be subtracted from the price of the board, just keep track of receipts. This deal can be used up to three months after initial rental and up to $200 can be discounted on any one board.

The paddleboards can be used on all type of water from flat water to class five rapids after enough experience. Since it is a hybrid of surfing, they can be taken down moving water while keeping balance and moving with the water. They are also efficient on flat water though as they remain remarkable stable with the aid of three rudders that keep the board steady on the underside.

Sizes for the boards are based on the user’s height and weight. The longer and wider the board, the more stable it will be. It is an amazing full body workout and is part of the reason the sport is gaining so much traction in the water sport world. It is also a favorite cross-training activity for skiers, snowboarders, and other extreme sports. The best part however could possibly be that the user is standing up the entire time, which makes for more than extraordinary views as it feels like walking on water.

In a review done by they called the Malibu “an excellent and inexpensive entry level board for a beginner.” They also complimented its ability on whitewater as well. “The Malibu offers the opportunity to enjoy paddling rivers without worrying about rocks; it’s a great whitewater board.”

Another surprisingly popular use for the paddleboards is yoga. Ever since the popular rise of the stand-up paddleboard, this has allowed yoga instructors to take their teachings to the next level – on the water. The boards are stable enough to do intricate posses while enjoying the peacefulness of a lake. The foam pad top makes for excellent cushion as well to do yoga on.

The sport originated in the Hawaiian Islands as the natives stood on their long surfboards and used the paddles from their outrigger canoes to paddle from island to island.

A great place to take these boards out in the area is the Quemahoning reservoir just past Ligonier on route 30, about an hour drive. Just a half hour drive though to Saltsburg, stand-up paddling can be done on the Loyalhanna Lake or the Conemaugh River. The Youghioghenny River can also be accessed through a few boat launches. Cedar Creek State Park is a popular drop in point and is only a half hour drive.
