October 21, 2009 (St. George, UT) – StatPacks™ were first conceived on a Las Vegas ambulance crew. As a rookie paramedic, Scott Nelson – an outdoor industry veteran – knew there had to be an alternative to bulky, cumbersome “black-hole bags.” Nelson began modifying backcountry packs for his own use, then built and tested his own full-blown prototypes with the Portneuf Life Flight team of Pocatello, Idaho.
Later, Bryce Thatcher joined the project, bringing more than 20 years of backcountry and adventure racing pack design to the table. Thatcher and Nelson worked with EMT’s, paramedics, firefighters, and search and rescue teams to refine the original concepts into well-engineered solutions.
The result? StatPacks™ changed the way emergency medical teams transport their gear allowing them to respond faster and save more lives.
The Golden Hour (pictured) combines the technical features of technical backcountry packs with the practical and organizational needs of search and rescue. Compact and comfortable, it’s built to organize and carry essential equipment. The Golden Hour’s harness system – like those found on technical backcountry packs – distributes weight evenly and provides enhanced ergonomics so medics can move faster. Burly number-10 YKK zippers with Hypalon garages, light and strong 500-denier Kodra fabric, and durable PU coatings that outlast ordinary PVC to provide long-lasting weather protection – these are just some of the technologies pulled from the backcountry to create a pack for front line emergency responders.
Says Nelson: “Before StatPacks™ Bryce and I had seen our outdoor packs race in the Eco-Challenge, summit major peaks, handle ultra-marathons – we’d made a variety of packs to do anything, go anywhere, and perform better than anything out there. Then, working as a medic, I knew we weren’t carrying our gear right. I took knowledge and need and blended them together. Then I worked with a variety of emergency pros to refine and abuse the gear. It worked.”
StatPacks™ builds a full line of packs for emergency responders. Each one is a fusion of technologies and practicality. Each one relies on the creativity of backcountry pack design to make first responders faster, more organized, and able to focus on the job.
