SteriPEN® Wins SNEWS Readers' Choice Award

Hydro-Photon, Inc., the leader in handheld water purifiers, is pleased to announce that SteriPEN has received the SNEWS Readers’ Choice Award. The full list was revealed on snewsnet.com and appears in the Summer 2009 issue of the magazine.

The SNEWS Readers’ Choice Awards celebrates the 25th Anniversary of SNEWS. The editors of SNEWS compiled a list of gear, apparel and footwear from the SNEWS archives and put the list to an industry vote to determine the top 25 innovative products that have helped fuel the development and growth of the outdoor industry over the last quarter century. The products chosen were deemed game-changing, pioneering and inventive.

In describing SteriPEN for the Readers’ Choice Awards, the editors of SNEWS said, “A fundamentally curious person, Miles Maiden started a solar energy company following college and worked with the U.S. government in the mid-90s on using C wavelength UV light to purify water. Maiden envisioned using ultraviolet technology, like that used in municipal water treatment plants, in a personal, portable device that would provide the user with safe drinking water anywhere. After successful experimentation, he created the SteriPEN, a portable UV water purifier that kills viruses, bacteria and protozoa — including Giardia and Cryptosporidium — in seconds. His company, Hydro-Photon, received its first SteriPEN patent in 1999. In 2001, Time Magazine named the SteriPEN one of the “Best Inventions of the Year.”
