Summit For Someone Announces Emmons Glacier Climb on Mt. Rainier

February 2009 (DENVER, COLO.) – Backpacker Magazine’s Summit For Someone, with Oregon-based Go Trek and Expeditions, is excited to announce a 4-day climb of the Emmons Glacier Route on Mount Rainier for July 19-22, 2009.
Summit For Someone, the No. 1 mountaineering fundraiser in the country, has for four years provided alpine adventures to hundreds of climbers, who raise money for Big City Mountaineers’ wilderness programs for at-risk urban youth. But this year’s Emmons climb is the first SFS offering on a route other than the Disappointment Cleaver Route, and will be the first SFS climb on Mount Rainier guided by Craig Van Hoy of Go Trek.
The Emmons Glacier Route is considered to be more of a wilderness experience than the popular Disappointment Cleaver, starting at the White River Campground in the northeast corner of Mount Rainier National Park, and ascending the largest of Mount Rainier’s 26 glaciers. The route covers 10,000 vertical feet over a three-day push to the summit, and climbers spend three nights camping.
The Emmons Glacier climb is just one of 14 different trips offered by Summit For Someone in 2009. Climbs range from beginner and intermediate climbs in Colorado, California, the Pacific Northwest and Wyoming to full-on expeditions in Alaska and Mexico.
